U.S. men's national team roster revealed

U.S. national team coach Gregg Berhalter named a 26-player roster for the three World Cup qualifiers in September.

The most notable selections were 18-year-old forward Ricardo Pepi, whom the USA and Mexico were both seeking to call up, and 20-year-old Konrad de la Fuente, picked after a fast start at his new club, Marseille.

Christian Pulisic (unavailable for Chelsea last weekend because he tested positive for Covid-19) is in the squad, as it Tim Ream, who left Fulham's match last weekend in the first half with an injury.

Ream, one of only six players with previous experience in World Cup qualifying, is one of six center backs selected. Only four outside backs were taken.

Reggie Cannon, Shaq Moore and Sam Vines, who all played at right back on the USA's 2021 Gold Cup championship team, were not picked. George Bello, who started at left back in the Gold Cup, is one of three teenagers in the squad along with Gio Reyna and Pepi.

Moore is one of five starters in the Gold Cup final not picked. Veterans Gyasi Zardes and Paul Arriola were both recently hurt in MLS action, while Eryk Williamson and Matthew Hoppe were also not picked.

Eighteen players played on the Concacaf Nations League championship team. Eight played on the Gold Cup championship team. Two players -- Kellyn Acosta and Sebastian Lletget -- played on both. Pepi and de la Fuente are the only call-ups who didn't play in one of the two summer tournaments.

Berhalter:

“We have spent the last two years building the foundation and culture of the team for this moment. World Cup Qualifying is a grueling challenge that demands a complete group effort in order to be successful. We are confident in our ability to respond to the challenges that are presented along the way.”

IMHOP smart move to include Pepsi. Hopefully it will pay off in the future...

Pepi; hahaha... We are looking for that "Proven" Goalscorer still... It's one of the "Wide Open" Positions; along with Left Back... I would have Preferred Moore and Vines... But, neither have been getting "Minutes"... Yedlin and Dest will Get "Man Handled" "On the Road"...

Only six of the 26 have CONCACAF qualifying experience. This isn't really a surprise, but rather an indication that these players haven't much experience playing together. The pandemic has complicated traveling.

    Best wishes.

Bob, The Less players from that Last CONcacaCrApF "Non-Qualifying" Group, THE BETTER...We wouldn't want any Cross-Contamination on this New Young Crop of "Gung-Ho", Confident, WINNERS.!!!

Key point Bob. That is my biggest concern! CONCACAF is a unique "dog fight", especially on the road. We'll see soon enough if these young lads are up to it.

My question marks are Tim Ream and Yedlin.  I would also like to understand Hoppe's absence , although I think I get it.  The USMNT wants to get Pepi and the dude from Marseilles some action.  Also, Hoppe has not been on a pitch since Gold Cup.  He won't be omitted in future.

Hoppe could get transferred to a new club before the window closes next week. If some club pays millions for him, they don't want him suddenly hurt in a qualifying game abroad. But Hoppe, if he ends up playing whenever he ends up this season, will (or should) be called up for the October games. Konrad earned this callup and is very effective in France now that he's getting starter minutes. Berhalter lost David Ochoa by not giving him friendly minutes against Costa Rica, so he can't let another prospect leave for a rival again.

If Ream sees the Field: We Lose.!!!... He can't play with this Group... He's like a "Turd in the Punch Bowl"... Kills the Rhythm and has NO Twitch.!!!... He is an Average Defensive Player on a 2nd Division English Team... Nuff said... We can do better

I HOPPE for our Sake, he can get on the Field Somewhere... Love his attitude.!!!

    Why so few midfielders?

  12. John Bonini replied, August 26, 2021 at 3:59 p.m.

Yes, exactly. I'm surprised Berhalter didn't add himself as an extra center-back option on the roster. Yeah, Musah is recovering from an injury. Still, Luca de la Torre, Caden Clark, Paxton Pomykal, Eryk Williamson, and others, including Gianluca Busio and Tanner Tessmann (yes, who are with new clubs in new cities and need to get adjusted), are better options than Lletget and Roldan. "Experience" at this point is the Voldemort of words that will keep the U.S. from reaching the next gear.

My thoughts, too. Maybe we don't need a midfield for the Hex (or whatever it's called now) because GB wants to bypass the midfield anyway? IDK. Is this what your squad looks like when you play a 4-1-4-1?

  14. Sam Bellin replied, August 26, 2021 at 9:50 p.m.

I'm hoping either Pulisic or Reyna will be placed as the starting attacking midfielder (the other should start at wing), and perhap Aaronson can be useful in that role as well.  Otherwise we have 5 D Mids (2 really good ones) and not much playmaking from the midfield.

  15. Billy Logan, August 26, 2021 at 3:34 p.m.

Expecting the outside backs to be indefatigable? idk

  16. Wooden Ships, August 26, 2021 at 4:16 p.m.

To be expected one might have gone with this one or that one. Greg has some momentum with his selections. I'm wondering if he still plans on using Dest in a game on the left which I'm not in favor of. Antonee has more experience but we might miss the attacking of Vines. He might go with three center backs in a game. Unless, Reyna or KDLF, drop in centrally, who would be our playmaker, dribbler to keep possession and make the pass to an unbalanced defense?

Took some effort to focus on this after sacrificing 11 Marines and a Navy Corpsman. My blood is boiling with this FUBAR.

  17. Bob Ashpole replied, August 26, 2021 at 6:13 p.m.

WS: my blood boiled in 2001 when the White House assigned the military a political mission after the military objectives in Afghanistan were accomplished. I assure you that the military had not forgotten the lessons of the Vietnam War in 2001.

As for the roster, I share your views. It seems that GB put a priority on playing Pepi. I want to see Renya in the center mid role with Weah on the right instead.

The worry I see is that GK is committed to experimenting with the roster at this stage of qualification. Infusing some young talent into the roster is one thing, but relying on inexperienced talent to qualify is another.

Agreed Bob; as they say in "Aliens"; "I say we Take Off and Nuke'm from Orbit, It's the only way to be Sure."... My Son is "Forward" Deployed to sort thru these "Refugees"... Not THERE, Thank God, but I'm sure ISIS-k/Al Qaeda Suicide Attackers are Mixing In with the SIVs...Hope we don't get another Fort Hood or FOB Marez.

  19. William Shine, August 26, 2021 at 11:17 p.m.

    Steffen
    Dest Brooks MRobinson ARobinson
    Adams Mckennie
    Reyna
    Weah Sargent Pulisic

    Maybe Aaronson for Weah

  20. Santiago 1314 replied, August 28, 2021 at 1:44 a.m.

William; Looks Good for Home Game: I think we might struggle at Rt. Back "On The Road"... Should have brought Moore for those games...
With Dike Out... I would go with:
    CP....Pefok...Sargent  (Away)
    CP...Sargent..Weah (Home)
