NWSL: Second Covid-related forfeit issued, Spirit fined $25,000

The National Women’s Soccer League awarded the Portland Thorns a forfeit after their home match against the Washington Spirit on Sept. 4 was called off.

The game was recorded as a 3-0 win in favor of Portland, and the Thorns received three points, which gave them a three-point lead over OL Reign with two games in hand in the standings.

The NWSL assessed the Spirit a $25,000 fine for breach of the league’s medical protocols related to Covid-19.

Washington's game against OL Reign next Sunday at Audi Field was cancelled, and OL Reign awarded a forfeit.
