Ballon d'Or: Sam Mewis is only American nominated for third female award

Sam Mewis, who has split time in 2021 between Manchester City and the North Carolina Courage, is the only American nominated for the third Women's Ballon d'Or award, given out to the best women's player in the world.

Norwegian Ada Hederberg won the France Football award in 2018, and Megan Rapinoe was the winner in 2019. No Ballon d"or was awarded for men or women in 2020. In 2019, Rapinoe was one of four Americans on the 20-player short list. In 2018, Lindsey Horan and Rapinoe were the two Americans on the 15-player short list.

The only other NWSL player on the 2021 short list (20 players) is Canadian captain Christine Sinclair (Portland Thorns).

The award is voted upon by players from around the world.

There is only one player named that works outside of UEFA. That spells weakness for the US, Australia and their two leagues.

I think that's because they actually have a champions league competition and we don't have anything remotely to compete with that. How is the competion in north central and South America pretty none existing accept for Canada.
until our southern countries besides Brazil start to take women's soccer that's what will see.
Asia is not doing any better as well.
