MLS playoff races remain in holding patterns

There was little change in the MLS playoff races after 12 games on Wednesday.

After games on Sunday, six teams were separated by five points in the battle for three playoff berths in the Eastern Conference. In the Western Conference, it was almost as close -- five teams were separated by five points with three playoff berths at stake. Only two teams had clinched playoff berths: conference leaders New England and Seattle.

And after the games on Wednesday night? The same five-point gaps involving the same teams in both conferences. The same two teams with tickets to the playoffs in hand.

Eastern Conference. Three ties in the Eastern Conference left the playoff almost exactly the same. The only difference: D.C. United, which lost to New England, 3-2, at home, dropped from sixth to seventh place behind CF Montreal.

Western Conference. The five teams sitting in sixth through 10th place all won on Wednesday.

Real Salt Lake was idle and dropped from to eighth place one point below Vancouver when the Whitecaps rallied to beat Portland, 3-2, on the road after they trailed 2-0 after the hour mark.

RSL, which has a game in hand on all the teams it is battling for a playoff spot, has a two-point lead over LAFC, which rallied to beat FC Dallas, 3-2, thanks to a hat trick from Colombian Cristian Arango, who has scored 11 goals in 13 games since arriving from Millonarios this summer.
