Defending MLS champion Columbus Crew could be without striker Gyasi Zardes for the rest of the 2021 regular season.
Zardes, 30, suffered a Grade 2 MCL sprain during the Crew's 1-1 tie at Nashville SC on Wednesday and will be out for 2-4 weeks.
The Crew, which sits in 10th place three points below the playoff line in the Eastern Conference, has four games left in the regular season:
Saturday, Oct. 23: NY Red Bulls (9th place);
Wednesday, Oct. 27: Orlando City (4th place);
Saturday, Oct. 30: at D.C. United (7th place);
Sunday, Nov. 7: Chicago (12th place).
The injury puts Zardes, who has nine goals in 21 MLS games for the Crew, in danger of missing the USA's November World Cup qualifiers against Mexico on Nov. 12 and at Jamaica five days later.
Zardes missed the three games in the USA's opening window with a hamstring injury but returned to play in all three games -- one start and two appearances off the bench -- in October.
He started for the USA when it beat Mexico, 1-0, in the 2021 Gold Cup final.
