MLS: New England captures first Supporters' Shield title

In MLS's first 25 seasons, every one of its 10 founding members except one won at least one league trophy (MLS Cup or Supporters' Shield).

In 2021, the New England Revolution joined them by capturing the Supporters' Shield.

On Saturday, the Revs clinched the regular-season title without kicking a ball. The Seattle Sounders' 2-1 defeat to Sporting KC left them 11 points behind New England with three games to play.

On Sunday, New England plays at Orlando City and will tie the MLS single-season record of 72 points set by LAFC in 2019 if they beat the Lions.

There were 11 games on Saturday to kick off the third-to-last weekend of the MLS regular season, but they produced little clarity in the playoff races. Just four teams have clinched postseason berths, Sporting KC and Colorado, a 2-0 winner over Portland, joining conference leaders New England and Seattle on Saturday.

In the Eastern Conference, NYCFC and the New York Red Bulls moved into the top seven with wins over D.C. United and Columbus, respectively.

D.C. United's 6-0 defeat to NYCFC was its worst loss in its 26 seasons and continued its October slide. It entered the month in third place but dropped it to ninth place after the debacle at Yankee Stadium, where it conceded three goals in the first 11 minutes.

On the other hand, the Red Bulls, who began the month in 10th place, are sixth after their 2-1 win at Columbus. The defending champion Crew dropped to 11th place behind Inter Miami with three games to play.

In the Western Conference
,, there were no changes in the standings as five of the six teams battling for the final three playoff berths tied on Saturday.

Despite Cristian Arango's sixth goal in the last three games and 12th in 14 games since he arrived in August, LAFC could only tie Minnesota United. The only loser was Real Salt Lake, which dropped a 1-0 decision to Chicago before 31,308 fans, the Fire's largest crowd since its return to Soldier Field.
