Concacaf W Championship qualifying: Mismatches abound

The first window -- five dates over seven days -- in qualifying for the new Concacaf W Championship has been completed.

Thirty teams were entered to determine the six group winners that will join the USA and Canada, the reigning Women's World Cup and Olympic women's soccer champions, in the Concacaf W Championship finals that will take place July 4-18 in Monterrey, Mexico.

The four semifinalists will qualify for the 2023 Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. The two third-place teams will move into the 10-team intercontinental playoffs that will determine the final three spots in the World Cup, which has been expanded from 24 to 32 teams.

The Concacaf W Championship winner will earn a berth in 2024 Olympic women's soccer. The second- and third-place teams will meet in a playoff to determine the second Concacaf qualifier for the Paris Olympics.

Of the 35 Concacaf teams eligible to take part in FIFA competitions, 32 entered in the Concacaf W Championship, up from 28 that took part in the 2018 Concacaf Women's Championship.

The 32 teams include first-time entrants Belize, Cayman Islands, Guatemala, Honduras and the British Virgin Islands. The three teams that did not enter are Bahamas, Montserrat and St. Lucia.

Most of the games so far have been mismatches -- 17 games decided by six or more goals. The biggest rout: Nicaragua's 19-0 win over Turks and Caicos Islands on Tuesday. Only two games have been decided by two or less goals -- Trinidad & Tobago's 2-0 and 2-1 wins.

Cuba's Yeranis Lee and Nicaragua's Yessenia Flores have had six-goals games.

The remaining sets of five games in each group will be played April 6-12.

Curious how much $$ Rapinoe and crew would earn running up 20-0 score line on Turks?
