• Pro soccer headed back to Wilmington, N.C. A group has been awarded rights to pursue a USL League One franchise that would start competing in 2024. It would be the first pro team in the state’s Cape Fear region since the Wilmington Hammerheads, the 2003 USL Second Division winners. The primary investor is Scott Sullivan. Also part of the ownership group is former N.C. State star Dewan Bader. It has plans for a soccer complex as part of a mixed use development.
