MLS: Stoppage-time dramatics move Inter Miami past Columbus

The early game between Columbus and Portland ended in a 1-1 tie when the Crew conceded a tying goal by Santiago Moreno in the fifth minute of stoppage time.

In the late game, Inter Miami beat D.C. United beat D.C. United, 3-2, on the road thanks to a goal by Gonzalo Higuaín in the fourth minute of stoppage time.

The two late goals amounted to a four-point swing, the difference between the Crew holding a four-point advantage over Inter Miami and Atlanta United for seventh place and the final playoff berth in the Eastern Conference, and Inter Miami leading the Crew on the first tie breaker (total wins).

For Columbus, it was déjà vu.

Two games ago, it led CF Montreal, 2-0, before conceding goals in the 88th minute and fourth minute of stoppage time and settling for a 2-2 tie. On Tuesday, it lost to Inter Miami, 2-1, when Higuain scored in the 82nd minute.

The late goals in the three games cost the Crew five points. Instead of challenging for a top four spot and a home game in Round One of the playoffs, it is fighting got its playoff life.
