Sinclair, Hooper lead Canadian rout in Gold Cup opener

Christine Sinclair scored four goals and Charmaine Hooper added a hat trick as the Canadian women's national team buried Haiti, 11-1, Wednesday in a Group 2 opener at the CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup in Victoria, British Columbia.

Silvana Burtini added a pair of goals for the Canadians, who dictated every phase of the match and might have scored two dozen goals with better fortune.

Hooper, of the WUSA's Atlanta Beat, had her hat trick by the 33rd minute as Canada romped to a 6-1 advantage. Sinclair, a sophomore at the University of Portland, tallied twice in each half. Burtini, formerly with the WUSA's Carolina Courage, tallied in the 13th and 85th minutes.

Notre Dame sophomore Candace Chapman also tallied for Canada, which got another goal from a Judith Fenelon own goal. Kencia Marseille scored for Haiti after Hooper and Burtini had supplied the hosts with a 2-0 advantage.

Canada started eight players based in the United States -- Hooper, Sinclair, Chapman, goalkeeper Erin McLeod (SMU), defenders Sharolta Nonen (Atlanta Beat), Breanna Boyd (U. of Nebraska) and Sasha Andrews (SMU), and midfielder Carmelina Moscato (Penn State) -- and its substitutions included University of Washington standout Clare Rustad and former WUSA player Amy Walsh.

Costa Rica also won its opener in the region's qualifying tournament for next year's Women's World Cup, beating Jamaica, 2-0, with Megan Chavez scoring both goals.
