U.S. ABROAD (Oct. 26-27): Friedel is injured

Brad Friedel helped Sunderland upset defending Premier League champion Arsenal, 2-1, at Highbury but faces the prospect of knee surgery after spraining his knee in practice before the game.

Started: 90 minutes. Despite spraining his knee prior to the match, Friedel was sensational in goal, frustrating the defending Premier League champions. Friedel's manager, Graeme Souness, said after the game: ''I think we've got the best keeper in the country, but he has a cartilage problem, and it popped out again during the warm-up when his knee jarred.'' Friedel plans to have surgery soon to fix the problem and will miss a few weeks of action, according to wire reports.
