NWSL breaks record for average attendance on opening weekend

NWSL broke its record for average attendance on the opening weekend of its regular season for the second year in a row.

This time by a lot.

The six games averaged 15,002 fans, up from an average of 10,150 fans in 2022.

They included 30,854 fans at San Diego’s Snapdragon Stadium -- a record NWSL crowd for a home opener -- for the Wave's 3-2 win over Chicago on Alex Morgan's penalty kick in the 89th minute.

For the second year in a row, Angel City FC drew a sellout of 22,000 fans for its home opener. Alyssa Thompson scored a sensational goal in her hometown debut, but Gotham FC rallied for a 2-1 win.

The Washington Spirit drew 11,281 fans at Audi Field -- a club record for its home opener -- for a 1-0 win over OL Reign on Trinity Rodman's goal.
