“Other communities that will be hosting World Cup events have been working on their World Cup preparations — some as long as 18 months. Others have at least a year. They’ve dedicated staff for those events. Many are big cities, we’re not. We have less staff than when we hosted Super Bowl [in 2016].”

-- Santa Clara Mayor Lisa Gillmor on the failure of the NFL's San Francisco 49ers to meet a Feb. 1 deadline set by a Santa Clara County civil grand jury to provide the city with key documents related to its hosting requirements (including security details) for the 2026 World Cup. The 49ers manage non-NFL events at the city-owned Levi’s Stadium. (Mercury News)
