MLS's primary transfer window closed on Monday. Deals included transfers, trades and loans.
* The Seattle Sounders have loaned midfielder Danny Leyva to the Colorado Rapids for the remainder of the 2023 season. The Sounders will get $92,000 in 2023 GAM and a third-round pick in the 2025 MLS SuperDraft.
Leyva, 19, has made 54 career regular-season appearances. The move to send him to the Rapids will allow him to get more playing time. The Seattle midfield includes two other young Americans, Josh Atencio and Obed Vargas.
“We’re pleased to get a deal done that we believe is a mutually beneficial opportunity for both Danny and the club,” said Sounders GM Craig Waibel. “With the Rapids, Danny will have the chance for more minutes in a system that fits his style, while we ultimately maintain decision-making capability on his future with Sounders FC.”
• Toronto FC have acquired 34-year-old forward CJ Sapong from Nashville SC for Canadian center back Lukas MacNaughton and up to $200,000 in GAM. The Reds will be the fifth MLS team for Sapong, who has scored 88 goals in 13 seasons. Toronto FC also acquired Zambian-born center back Aime Mabika from Inter Miami for up to $200,000 in GAM.
• The Columbus Crew have acquired left back Malte Amundsen from New York City FC for $400,000 in guaranteed GAM and an additional $100,000 in conditional GAM. The Crew needs help at left back following the season-ending injury to Will Sands (ACL knee surgery).
• D.C United have acquired Colombian winger Cristian Dajome from the Vancouver Whitecaps for $350,000 in 2024 GAM and an additional $200,000 in 2025 GAM. Dajome scored 17 goals and recorded 12 assists in 103 appearances.
• The Houston Dynamo signed 21-year-old Nigerian winger Ibrahim Aliyu from Croatian club NK Lokomotiva as part of MLS's U22 Initiative.
• CF Montreal loaned 19-year-old midfielder Rida Zouhir to USL Championship's San Antonio FC. St. Louis City loaned forward Samuel Adeniran San Antonio FC with the option to recall him. He played on loan from Seattle in 2022 and helped SAFC win the USL Championship title.
Lotta new faces in Houston. Actually building depth. Clever moves not making headlines. Very strange to see after the last decade. New ownership and management walking the walk.
