U.S. Open Cup: Lots of drama but just two upsets in third round

The field is complete for the 2023 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup's round of 32.

Thursday's draw will feature 24 MLS teams and eight USL Championship teams. The 10 teams from Division 3 and amateur leagues all lost in the third round, in sharp contrast to 2022 when six Division 3 teams won their third-round games.

Four of eight USL League One teams advanced in 2022 -- and Union Omaha went on to reach the quarterfinals -- but all five USL League One teams lost in this year's third round by a margin of 13-3.

The third round featured lots of drama but just two upsets.

On Tuesday, Frank Yallop's Monterey Bay F.C. knocked off the San Jose Earthquakes, 1-0. He had coached the Quakes for eight and a half years at the helm in MLS, league them to league titles in 2001 and 2003.

The only other USL Championship team to knock off an MLS team was Memphis 901, which rallied to beat Atlanta United, 2-1, in overtime on Wednesday. The 2019 Open Cup champion was on the verge of winning when Phillip Goodrum equalized from the penalty spot in the sixth minute of stoppage time. Memphis won the game in overtime on a goal from 18-year-old Alabaman Nighte Pickering, who was signed out of the FC Dallas academy.

In goal for Memphis was Bill Hamid, who won the 2013 Open Cup with D.C. United. He only needed to make one save. By contrast, Atlanta keeper Clement Diop matched his career-high with eight saves as Memphis finished with a 30-10 edge in shots.

Two MLS teams won in wild matches against USL Championship opposition.

Inter Miami equalized at Miami FC in the 89th minute on a goal by Shanyder Borgelin but appeared to be on the way out after DeAndre Yedlin's own goal in the 116th minute. But two minutes later, the Herons drew even again on a goal by Ryan Sailor and won the shootout 5-3 after the South Florida clash ended 2-2.

The Seattle Sounders led the San Diego Loyal 2-0 and 3-1 before being forced into overtime on Kyle Adams' goal in the third minute of stoppage time. Reed Baker-Whiting, 18, put the Sounders back ahead in 101st minute, but the match at Starfire appeared to be headed to a shootout when Jackson Kasanzu scored for the Loyal in the 115th minute.

The Sounders won 5-4, though, when Fredy Montero (photo) scored his second goal of the game and club-record 10th in his Open Cup career on a penalty pick in the third minute of stoppage time in the second overtime period.

Coach Brian Schmetzer heavily rotated the Sounders' lineup from the team that defeated Minnesota United, 1-0, on Saturday Only Obed Vargas and Léo Chú were holdovers in the starting lineup, while four players were used after being called up from the Tacoma Defiance on short-term agreement.

Real Salt Lake also had to go to overtime at the Las Vegas Lights before advancing, 3-1. Captain Damir Kreilach scored twice in overtime and Las Vegas native Danny Musovski added an insurance goal.

I wonder what kind of arrangement FC Dallas has with any talented player coming out of Alabama? Could it just be a coincidence? Is there some sort of arrangement? Curious

Yes there probably is a dottig line link - via a former player / and the coach who recruited him to Houston then moved with him to Dallas and helped him grow and move cross the pond.  I don't know the story personally, but I do know that coach will know the Alabama landscape and is a exceptional, identifier and developer of talent.
