Nashville SC's Hany Mukhtar remains MLS's hottest player

Nashville SC moved into second place in MLS's Supporters' Shield race with a 3-1 win over Columbus Crew on Sunday night in front of a sellout crowd of 30,109 at GEODIS Park.

The win extended Nashville SC's unbeaten streak in MLS play to seven consecutive matches, the longest active streak in the league. It trails FC Cincinnati, a 1-0 winner at Colorado on Saturday night to improve to 10-1-3 play, by five points.

Hany Mukhtar, the 2022 MLS MVP, led Nashville SC with a goal and an assist to give him six goals and five assists in the last five games and a league-high 16 goal contributions (9 goals + 7 assists) in 2023.

Fafà Picault and Teal Bunbury scored off corner kicks in the second half to erase the Crew's 2nd-minute lead on a goal by Yaw Yeboah before Mukhtar sealed the win with a goal in the seventh minute of stoppage time.

"It didn’t feel like that two minutes into the game when Yeboah hit an absolute rocket that I don’t think any goalkeeper that I’ve ever seen could do anything about," said Nashville SC coach Gary Smith. "But beyond that, I thought the guys did an excellent job of disrupting a team that is based around possession and can be extremely frustrating and difficult to play against."

• The game marked Walker Zimmerman's his first appearance since April 29 against Atlanta United. He had been sidelined with a groin strain.

Watched Nashville vs Columbus. The level was concerning. Just bad soccer unfortunately. Especially the finishing and the defending. Something needs to change
