NWSL Weekend: Portland and San Diego pull into lead

The Portland Thorns and San Diego Wave share the NWSL lead on points thanks to wins on the road this weekend.

They began the weekend among four teams tied for second place one point behind surprise leader Gotham FC.

Sophia Smith and Christine Sinclair scored to give Portland a 2-0 win over OL Reign in the second game of Saturday's Seattle-Portland doubleheader at Lumen Field that drew an announced crowd of 42,054 fans for the Sounders-Timbers MLS game.

On Sunday, the Wave ended Gotham FC's unbeaten league run of four games with a 1-0 win on Makenzy Doniak's goal 44 seconds into the second half. The match drew a Gotham record crowd of 15,058 at Red Bull Arena.
