Chicharito tears ACL

The LA Galaxy's
Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in the first half of Wednesday's U.S. Open Cup quarterfinal match at Real Salt Lake.

No date has been set for Hernandez's surgery, nor has the length of the rehabilitation process been determined.

Chicharito, 35, has scored one goal and added one assist in nine MLS games in 2023 for the Galaxy, which is in last place in MLS's overall standings with a 3-9-3 record. It lost the Open Cup match to RSL, 3-2.

Chicharito in MLS:
2021 LA Galaxy, 12 games, 2 goals
2021 LA Galaxy, 21 games, 17 goals, 3 assists
2022 LA Galaxy, 32 games, 18 goals, 2 assists
2023 LA Galaxy, 9 games, 1 goal, 1 assist

In Chicharito's absence, Dejan Joveljic should take over as the Galaxy's center forward. The 23-year-old Serbian, signed in 2021, has scored 15 goals in 60 games.
