No. 8 Virginia Tech, one of seven unbeaten and untied ACC men's teams, improved its record to 4-0-0 with a 1-0 win over William & Mary.

Sophomore Scott Dillie's header off a beautiful Patrick Nyarko cross in the 13th minute was the lone goal.

Soccer interest is running high in Blacksburg, where 1,411 fans, the fifth-largest crowd ever to witness a Hokies' men's game, turned out on a Tuesday night for a non-conference game.

"The crowd was great tonight," Coach Oliver Weiss said. "It was an exciting way to kick off the home schedule."

  • No. 12 Santa Barbara beat Cal Poly, 2-0, for its 11th consecutive win over its Central Coast rivals in the Big West opener for both teams. Chris Pontius found the net for the first time this season with a 30-yard rocket, and freshman Bongomin Otti scored his fourth goal in four games.

  • Playing without five suspended players, including All-Americans Randi Patterson and Scott Jones, No. 22 UNC Greensboro scored on goals by Travis Young, a transfer from Kentucky, and Michael FitzGerald in the first 13 minutes to hand Campbell its first loss of the season with a 2-0 victory. Freshman goalkeeper Nate Berry earned his first collegiate shutout in the makeup game.
