USL Championship: Weekend report

Eastern Conference:
Pittsburgh took the conference lead with a 2-0 win over Charleston — its fifth win in a row
in their top-to-the-table clash that drew fans at Highmark Stadium. The Battery had a 13-4 edge in shots but fell on goals by Junior Etou after 21 seconds and Tola Showunmi in the 83rd minute. • Tampa Bay is third, two points off the lead, thanks to a 3-2 win over Mew Mexico United. The Rowdies got two goals from Ryan Spaulding and one goal and one assist from Charlie Dennis to extend their unbeaten run to seven matches. • Memphis 901 tied a franchise record with its fifth straight win in a 3-1 win over Louisville City. Nighte Pickering, the 18-year-old Alabaman, continued his hot form with the go-ahead goal in first-half stoppage time. He has scored goals in three consecutive matches and tallied three goals and two assists in the last four games.


Western Conference:
• Sac Republic FC, which was held to a 1-1 tie at San Diego, held on to its three-point lead when second-place El Paso was held to a 2-2 tie at San Antonio FC, ending its seven-game winning streak. • Colorado Springs snapped a five-game losing streak when it beat Orange County SC, 4-0. Marco Rios, a 17-year-old forward, led the Switchbacks, winning a penalty Jairo Henriquez converted in the 71st minute and scoring the final goal in the 73rd minute, all in four minutes after he entered the game.
Rios was a 2023 USL Academy Cup First XI pick with Real Colorado.
