North Carolina, ranked No. 1 in the
Soccer America Men's Top 25, lost its first game of the season when it fell to
N.C. State, 3-1, in the ACC opener.
Santiago Fusilier connected on a 35-yard strike in the 72nd minute, and freshman
Alan Sanchez followed with a penalty kick goal five minutes later to give N.C. State its first victory over the Tar Heels since 1997. Carolina, unbeaten in its last 12 games (9-0-3)
against the Wolfpack, then had two players red carded:
Ted Odgers in the 78th minute and
Garry Lewis in the 81st to
finish with only nine players.
Freshman
Jorge Mora scored the first goal for the Pack, and senior
Corey Ashe
tallied the Tar Heels’ lone goal. Three goals were the first goals UNC goalkeeper
Justin Hughes had given up all season.
