1. N.C. State knocks off No. 1 North Carolina

North Carolina, ranked No. 1 in the Soccer America Men's Top 25, lost its first game of the season when it fell to N.C. State, 3-1, in the ACC opener.

Santiago Fusilier connected on a 35-yard strike in the 72nd minute, and freshman Alan Sanchez followed with a penalty kick goal five minutes later to give N.C. State its first victory over the Tar Heels since 1997. Carolina, unbeaten in its last 12 games (9-0-3) against the Wolfpack, then had two players red carded: Ted Odgers in the 78th minute and Garry Lewis in the 81st to finish with only nine players.

Freshman Jorge Mora scored the first goal for the Pack, and senior Corey Ashe tallied the Tar Heels’ lone goal. Three goals were the first goals UNC goalkeeper Justin Hughes had given up all season.

-- No. 17 Marquette scored on a goal by Lauren Weber in the 46th minute to earn a 1-1 tie at Saint Louis on Wednesday night. Courtney Hulcer, daughter of former New York Cosmos player Larry Hulcer, beat MU goalkeeper Laura Boyer in the 28th minute for the first goal Marquette has yielded all season. "Obviously, as a team, we were disappointed in our first half play," Marquette coach Markus Roeders said. "Give Saint Louis credit, they were proactive on the field, making things happen. We were being very reactive, playing a step slow."

-- Long Islanders Gina DiMartino scored two goals and Kerry McNicholas added three assists as No. 23 Boston College crushed Sacred Heart, 7-0.
