    Former Portuguese national team coach Carlos Queiroz is the new head coach of the New York/New Jersey MetroStars, the team announced May 27. The 43-year-old Queiroz led Portugal to the world U-16 championship in 1989, and the world U-20 title in 1991. He also took the full Portuguese national team through World Cup '94 qualifying, narrowly missing a berth after a 1-0 loss to Italy on the final day of qualification.
