• United States to compete in 1999 FIFA Confederations Cup
    The U.S. national team will compete in the 1999 FIFA Confederations Cup. The eight-team tournament is set to be played in Mexico during the first two weeks of January, 1999. With Mexico as host, the U.S., runner-up in the 1998 CONCACAF Gold Cup, receives an invitation. The other participants will be Asian champion Saudi Arabia, African champion Egypt, defending Confederations Cup champion Brazil, South American runner-up Bolivia, a team from Europe (to be appointed by UEFA) and the Oceania champion (to be determined at the Oceania Cup in Brisbane, Australia this fall.)

Iribarren, who joined the Crew in July of 1996, was forced to miss the entire 1997 season due to visa problems.
