It has been our position that Steve Sampson's task of picking the starting 11 for the World Cup is simpler than it appears. Instead of picking specialists at all 10 field positions, he should simply select the 10 best players. Where should they align themselves on the field? That question was answered during the Austria game. They're all, it seems, in midfield. For the first time, soccer fans will have the opportunity to select the starting lineups when MLS USA battles the MLS World All-Stars at the 1998 MLS All-Star Game Sunday, August 2 at 3:30 p.m. (ET) at the Florida Citrus Bowl in Orlando. The game will be televised live on ABC. The new format, a departure from the Eastern Conference vs. Western Conference matchup in the first two MLS All-Star games, commemorates World Cup France '98, in which many MLS stars will participate. Tickets for the 1999 Women's World Cup will officially go on sale to the U.S. Soccer family on Friday May 1 at 10:00 a.m. (ET). Tickets will be available in Stadium Series packages, which include all games played in a particular city. Members of the U.S. Soccer family will have the first chance to purchase packages, primarily through a direct-mail ticket brochure targeted at soccer fans in and around the eight WWC venue communities. German great Franz Beckenbauer and former U.S. women's captain April Heinrichs head the list of '98 inductees into the National Soccer Hall of Fame. Beckenbauer, who captained West Germany to the 1974 World Cup title and coached it to the '90 title, starred in the North American Soccer League for the New York Cosmos (1977-80 and '83). Heinrichs was one of the original stars of the U.S. national team, helping the team capture the inaugural Women's World Cup in 1991 as part of the famed "triple-edged sword" with Michelle Akers and Carin Jennings-Gabarra. The U.S. U-23 national team completed its Chula Vista, Calif. training camp by drawing 0-0 in an exhibition match with the A-League's San Diego Flash. The team will next gather in Milwaukee, Wis. on July 24 to prepare for a July 26 match against the 1997 A-League champion Milwaukee Rampage.
