  • U.S. national team notes (May 30)
U.S. World Cup team Head Coach Steve Sampson's decision on who to start at forward did not become any clearer today, as the U.S. failed to score for the second time in its last three exhibition matches. Though the U.S. created a number of scoring chances in its 0-0 tie against Scotland, they failed to convert any of them. "I would be more concerned if we weren't creating chances, but we are," Sampson said. "It's a matter of each individual being more composed and more precise in front of the goal." Sampson said he was pleased with the performance of …
  • Two goals for Keller as U.S. women blank New Zealand
Debbie Keller scored twice and Lorrie Fair tallied her first international goal as the U.S. women's national team crushed New Zealand, 5-0, at RFK Stadium May 30. In front of a sun-bathed and enthusiastic crowd of 46,037, the U.S. team had little trouble with New Zealand, scoring just six minutes into the game when 20-year-old forward Cindy Parlow hammered home Joy Fawcett's rolling cross. "We played a dynamic attacking match," said U.S. coach Tony DiCicco. "We played hard for 90 minutes and Debbie Keller definitely showed why I think we have 18 starters on this team. It's a great feeling …

  • Q&A with the SA Editors: May 29, 1998
Michael Duggan Jacksonville, N.C. My 12-year-old son loves to play soccer and is very good. I would like to know how to get information regarding the boys national teams at the youth age levels. How does one try out or get invited to camps? Dan Woog: The route to the national team begins at the state level. Your first step should be to call your state association for information regarding ODP (Olympic Development Program) qualifications, tryouts, schedules, etc. From the ODP teams (also called "state teams"), players advance to the regional level, and then to the national team level. Your …

  • MIKE WOITALLA: MLS scores with rule change
MLS produced a videotape showing the worst of soccer in hopes of creating a better game. It's called "Sending-Off Offenses" and my legs are sore just from watching it. It comprises 28 brutal tackles from 1997 MLS action. Ref boss Joe Machnik created it to teach referees, coaches and players about the new rule -- the red card for a tackle from behind "that endangers the safety of an opponent." FIFA introduced the rule based on a request from its Technical and Sports Medical Committees, which cited a large number of leg injuries. It goes into effect at the World …

New England has received its fifth foreign allocation, Colombian midfielder Oscar Pareja. "Oscar is an extremely skillful and creative player who will create scoring opportunities for himself and his teammates," said New England coach Thomas Rongen. "We are fortunate to get such a talented midfielder in the prime of his career." Pareja has been a member of the Colombian national team pool and has starred at Colombian First Division clubs Deportivo Cali and Independiente Medellin. He also lead the youth team of America Cali to the 1987 national youth title. Pareja, whose uncle, aunt and cousins live in Massachusetts, may …
