Esse Baharmast, the American referee, made the correct call on a penalty against Brazil in a match June 23 and remains in the referee pool for the second round of France '98. Baharmast was pilloried in the press throughout the world after awarding Norway a late penalty that sent the Europeans through to the second round at Morocco's expense. Television replays appeared to show that there was no foul, but a local French station showed a camera angle different from the international feed.
