  • MLS: Columbus' Williams cleared to play
Columbus Crew midfielder Andrew Williams has been cleared to begin his MLS career and will be in uniform when the Crew visit Miami July 29. The Jamaican international arrived in Columbus on July 16 but has not been able to play due to the finalization of paper work between MLS and the Jamaican Federation. Williams, a two-time all-America selection at Rhode Island, appeared in one game for Jamaica in the 1998 World Cup in France, playing 18 minutes in the Reggae Boyz' 3-1 loss to Croatia. His arrival should help to bolster a Crew lineup depleted by injuries to Brian ...

  • U.S. Women hammer Denmark 5-0 in Goodwill Games semifinals
Forward Mia Hamm registered her 9th career hat trick as the U.S. women's national team hammered Denmark 5-0 in a 1998 Goodwill Games semifinal. With the win, the U.S. will play in the gold-medal match at 8:30 p.m. July 27 against China -- a rematch of the gold-medal match from the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. A stubborn Denmark defense held the U.S. without a shot for the first 18 minutes, and American keeper Briana Scurry did well to turn away a driven shot from Merete Pedersen early on. However, the USA suddenly exploded with a quick series of passes to create ...
