  • Charles names Olympic team roster for Milwaukee match, England trip
    U.S. Olympic team coach Clive Charles has announced the roster for the U.S. U-23 national team, which will face the defending A-League champion Milwaukee Rampage on July 26 before departing for a 16-day training camp in Manchester, England. 15 players have been named for the match versus the Rampage, with at least four more set to join for the tour of England. Following the Milwaukee match, the team will depart for Manchester on July 27 and will spend 16 days training at the grounds of legendary English powerhouse Manchester United.   • MLS: Galaxy midfielder Sanchez sold to Morelia
    Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder Wellington Sanchez has been sold to Morelia of the Mexican First Division. MLS signed the Ecuadoran international prior to the 1998 season and assigned him to the MetroStars, who traded him to Los Angeles April 2 for Eduardo Hurtado. Sanchez appeared in 11 games for the Galaxy, scoring once and adding four assists. He assisted on two goals in Los Angeles' 3-1 win over Tampa Bay on July 15. The move will open up a foreign player slot for Los Angeles, which now has four international players: Mauricio Cienfuegos, Carlos Hermosillo, Martin Machon and Welton.
  • W-LEAGUE: Boston to host W-1 finals Aug. 14-16
    The USISL has announced that the Boston Renegades will host the W-League's W-1 championship weekend Aug. 14-16 at Bowditch Field. "We are delighted to be in the Boston area, which has been very supportive of women's soccer," said USISL commissioner Francisco Marcos. "The Renegades have set the pace in establishing their team as a key sports attraction." As host team, the Renegades (currently atop the W-1 North Division) will receive an automatic bid.   • MLS: Fusion cans Cordoba, names Brazilian Ivo Wortmann coach
    Brazilian Ivo Wortmann has been named the new head coach of the Miami Fusion. Wortmann replaces Carlos "Cacho" Cordoba, who recorded eight wins (three in regulation) and 11 losses as the Fusion's first head coach. A former member of the Brazilian National Team and head coach of the Saudi Arabian national team, Wortmann, 48, led his first practice with Miami the evening of July 24. Wortmann, who is fluent in English, Spanish and Portuguese, has served for the past year as director of coaching at the highly regarded adidas Soccer Academy at the Bollettieri Sports Academy in Bradenton, Fla.     D.C. United's rookie midfielder Ben Olsen has been named to the MLS USA All-Star team for the Aug. 2 All-Star Game in Orlando, Fla.
