  • CONCACAF Champions Cup: D.C. United and Necaxa through to semifinals
Report Jaime Moreno scored on a cross from close range in the 68th minute to give defending champion D.C. United a 1-0 win over Olimpia Honduras in the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Champions Cup in Las Vegas, Nev. Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the first half, despite several quality opportunities by both squads. In the 14th minute, Roy Lassiter was freed on the left flank after Richie Williams won a tackle. Lassiter's blast from 20 yards out was parried away by Olimpia's Argentinean-born keeper, Carlos Prono. On the resultant corner, Marco Etcheverry found …
  • MLS: Conference Semifinal Playoff Dates and Times
MLS Commissioner Don Garber announced today the dates, times and partial television schedule for the 1999 MLS Conference Semifinals. The MLS Conference Semifinals consist of a best-of-three series, with the top-seeded team owning home-field advantage and hosting games one and three (if necessary). With seven-points separating the West's first-place Los Angeles Galaxy (19-11, 51 points) and fourth-place defending MLS Cup Champion Chicago Fire (16-14, 44 points), the race for home-field advantage could go down to the wire with Los Angeles (2), the Colorado Rapids (3), the Dallas Burn (2) and Chicago (2) averaging slightly more than two games each in …
  • Q&A with the SA Editors: Sept. 30, 1999
Kenya Brown College Park, Md. Who do you think will be the next group of American players in MLS to try their luck with a European club at the end of the season? I see Eddie Lewis (San Jose Clash) leading the pack and I sort of have a feeling that C.J. Brown (Chicago Fire) may get an offer or two. Also, do you think Christoph Daum, the coach of Bayer Leverkusen, is a huge admirer of the American soccer player? Frankie Hejduk, Landon Donovan and John Thorrington are proof that he must see something special in this country. Ridge …

  • MLS Beat: The crash that is the Clash
Can Osiander win with QuinnÆs core of players? The storybook saga of Brian Quinn in American soccer has, once again, turned sad. For the third straight season with Quinn in charge, San Jose couldnÆt finish among the top four in its conference. Quinn played for more than a decade in the United States in the NASL and MISL and with the U.S. national team. A native of Belfast, Northern Ireland, he was sworn in as …
