æThe worst part of being versatileÆ Second-year defender Carey TalleyÆs versatility has kept him busy all over the field for D.C. United; his strong performance in D.C.Æs playoff-opening 2-0 win over Miami came in relief of injured Carlos Llamosa. SOCCER AMERICA: A fine start to the playoffs. CAREY TALLEY: It was good to win after those two losses [in D.C.Æs final two regular-season games]. We wanted the momentum coming into the playoffs, and we didnÆt get it. I think we showed everyone that we came out to play against Miami. SA: Just about everyone figures the …

Colorado Rapids defender Marcelo Balboa is more concerned with his team's horrible scoring slump than frenzied Los Angeles fans angry after the U.S. national veteran was involved in another controversial incident with a Galaxy player. Homecomings should be heartfelt, not hostile, yet Marcelo Balboa had much more on his mind than the boos and whistles that greeted his every touch at the Rose Bowl Oct. 17. Galaxy fans, not without reason, vented their wrath on Balboa after a collision between him and L.A. midfielder Simon Elliott resulted in a second yellow card and ejection for Elliott in the …

The major goal of MLS should be to make itself attractive to a nice television contract. I think eliminating schedule uncertainties in the playoffs could help. A solution exists that is even soccer-centric. To the shorten the playoffs and add creditability to the determining the champion, how about using a home-and-away aggregate score playoff? Then you'd know the winner will be decided in two games. It also assures the two finalists would get a match at their home stadium. …

The U.S. men's national team will play a friendly match against Morocco on Nov. 17. The match will be played in Casablanca or Rabat, pending confirmation from the Moroccan soccer federation. The friendly against Morocco will mark Coach Bruce Arena's eighth test against a nation that played in France '98. Morocco advanced to France '98 and looked impressive with a 1-1-1 record. However, it failed to advance in a group that included Norway, Brazil and Scotland. Morocco, seeking to host to the 2006 FIFA World Cup, is preparing for the 2000 African Cup of Nations at the end of January. …
