The camp will last nine days in preparation of the team's Jan. 14 arrival into Los Angeles for its showdown with Iran on Jan. 16 at the Rose Bowl (live on ESPN at 2 p.m. PT). "This is as close to a full team that we've had since I've been coach," said Arena. "Obviously this is a critical year for us with World Cup qualifying approaching at the end of summer, so it's ...

  • MLS: Revs and Metros start again
Clavijo and Zambrano win the coaching races No two MLS teams have a worse track record in picking coaches than the Metros and the Revs. Not surprisingly, they have the worst all-time records in league play. The Metros have used Eddie Firmani, Carlos Queiroz, Carlos Alberto Parreira, Alfonso Mondelo and Bora Milutinovic. Playoff appearances: two. Playoff wins: one (in a shootout). All-time record: 50-78. New England began with Frank Stapleton, had a brief run at respectability with Thomas Rongen, then crashed last season under Walter Zenga. Record to date: 53-75. Playoff appearances: one. Assem Abdalla Fort Wayne, Ind. Would you please give me the score for the USA vs. Egypt friendly game in Mexico on July 20, 1999. Mike Woitalla: That was a closed-door scrimmage on the eve of both teams' participation in the Confederations Cup. It does not count as a full international. Nevertheless, the USA won, 4-3, on goals by Jovan Kirovski (2), Eddie Lewis and Brian McBride. The USA had taken a 4-1 lead and Egypt scored two late goals. I am sorry that I do not have the names of the Egyptian goalscorers. (If you have a question for ...

Matthew Blanton Chicago, Ill. Is it just me or is anybody shocked at what is happening to the Project-40 graduating class? Some of these guys who were cut by their MLS clubs (definitely not all) were in my opinion quality players who were far from reaching their potential. Guys like Buka [Ubusuku Abukusumo] at Columbus played some quality minutes at time. So much for developing guys we already started investing time and money into. I mean, does it make sense to send this message to the up'n'coming lads who are trying to decide on whether to stay in college or ...
  • MLS: Season's meetings
As the coaches and general managers of MLS grapple with patching holes, they must in some ways work blind. Changes in the classification and distribution of players are under discussion. The league has made no official announcements, but teams are working under an assumption that the roster limit will drop from 20 to 19 players. Not approved yet expected to be adopted is a provision that enables each team to carry several younger players, domestic or foreign, who would not count against a team's roster nor its salary cap. The cap is expected to increase slightly to $1.7 ...

"The league has assured us that, via the allocation, a substantial amount of money will be made available in order for us to seek and acquire the type of player, specifically an impact striker, we need to move to the next level," Tampa Bay president Nick Sakiewicz said. "This was a difficult decision to make because we ...
