This wasnÆt the way Marcello Lippi hoped to begin ItalyÆs final push before the World Cup. The Azzurri coach faced calls for his resignation after becoming embroiled in the widening Italian soccer scandal. No one accused Lippi of doing anything wrong, other than having coached for eight years at Juventus, which is at the heart of the scandal, and being the father of Davide Lippi, who is a consultant for GEA, the soccer management agency that is also being investigated. At the ItaliansÆ training camp in Coverciano, Guido Rossi, who was brought in as an emergency caretaker to run the …

BRUCE ARENA, coach ''First of all I think our opponents played a better game than us tonight. They had a definite game plan and the objective was to keep the U.S. team off the scoreboard and they certainly accomplished that. They shortened the game with fouling, delaying and all fair and within the rules of the game. They did a very solid job. They caught us at the end of the game with a mistake and got a goal. I think they would have been very, very happy with zero-zero. "On the other end, we werenÆt sharp. We …

By Ridge Mahoney Africa is Africa, one huge, mysterious continent to the rest of the world, except when you're talking about soccer. Want to get a Nigerian riled up? Tell him how good Cameroon is. Needless to say, the pragmatic Cameroonian reliance on defense doesn't impress fans in Lagos. And vice versa. So to put a lot of faith in Morocco, tonight's U.S. foe in the first of three warmup matches* prior to the team's departure for Germany, being much like Ghana is scarcely relevant. As Coach Bruce Arena stated repeatedly throughout the …
