  • WORLD: Man United's lead cut to two points
Manchester United's lead in the English Premier League has been cut from eight points to two in five days following its 1-0 loss at West Ham United on Sunday. Second-place Chelsea, which beat Newcastle in a makeup game on Wednesday, closed the gap to two points after winning, 3-2, at Everton. The West Ham won on Nigel Reo-Coker's goal in the 75th minute. The Hammers had never previously beaten United at Upton Park since the start of the Premier League. FRANCE. Lyon, winner of the last five league titles, opened up a 17-point lead …
  • U.S. ABROAD: Cherundolo sees red
Steve Cherundolo got an early start to the holidays when he was sent off late in Hannover's 3-1 loss at Nuremberg for a handball in the box. The loss snapped a four-game unbeaten streak for Hannover, which entered the Bundesliga's winter break in 11th place -- a respectable placement after a terrible start. Things don't look as rosy for the Bundesliga's other Americans, however. Kasey Keller's Borussia Moenchengladbach lost, 2-0, at Bochum, to finish with a 10-game winless streak and fall into the relegation zone in 16th place. Benny Feilhaber watched from the bench as 17th-place …
  • CLUB WORLD CUP: Internacional stuns Barca
Internacional of Brazil stunned Barcelona, 1-0, to win the Club World Cup before 67,128 fans in Yokohama on Sunday. Barca, the European champion, had the big edge in play, but substitute Adriano scored on a breakaway in the 82nd minute to give Internacional, the Copa Libertadores champion, the victory. Barca was the heavy favorite after blasting Mexico's Club America, 4-0, in the semifinals, but a Brazilian club was crowned world champion for the second year in a row. Last year, Sao Paulo beat Liverpool, 1-0, in the final. In this year's third-place game, …
  • IN MEMORIAM: Lamar Hunt, a man of honor
The accolades and tributes you are reading in the aftermath of Lamar Hunt's death are incredible, staggering, almost incomprehensible. They suggest an entrepreneurial colossus, a gargantuan driven by ambition, burning with fervor, consumed by conquest. Not so, not in the sense that a Jerry Jones or George Steinbrenner or Don King suck up all surrounding light as would a flesh-and-blood black hole, so obsessed they are with their own personas. Those paeans to Lamar are spiced with poignant anecdotes, slice-of-life stories, heartfelt homages to his gentleness, his dignity, his kindness. Money is power, but life is much more, …

  • ARGENTINA: Estudiantes stuns Boca in playoff
Last week, Boca Juniors coach Ricardo La Volpe said he would be hanged if his team didn't win Argentina's Torneo Apertura. After Estudiantes stunned Boca, 2-1, in a playoff on Wednesday, La Volpe did something less dramatic. He said he was quitting. The playoff ended a stunning reversal late in the Argentine season and a short tenure for the former Mexico national team coach as boss at Boca.Boca losses to modest Belgrano and Lanus in the last two games of the season allowed Estudiantes to erase a four-point deficit and earn a single-game playoff at the Velez Sarsfield stadium. Boca led …
  • Lamar Hunt dies
Lamar Hunt, the man who may have done more to advance soccer's cause in the USA than any other individual, died on Wednesday at age 74 from complications of cancer. Hunt was a leading investor in the NASL from its founding. He returned to the pro soccer scene when MLS launched in 1996 as investor-operator of the Columbus Crew and the Kansas City. His financing of Crew Stadium started the wave of stadium building for MLS, and shortly after The Hunt Sports Group bought FC Dallas it orchestrated the construction of Pizza Hut Park. Hunt, the son of legendary Texas …

CONMEBOL began inviting Mexican teams to the Libertadores Cup and other South Americans competitions in the mid-1990s.Second-half goals by Gabriel Caballero (the Argentine-born Mexico international) and sub Damian Alvarez (not the former MLS player) gave the Tuzos the title. Colo Colo's only goal was scored by Humberto Suazo in the 35th minute. Pachuca held Colo Colo's Argentine-born star, Matias Fernandez, in check. …
  • MLS: Players on the Move
NATE DOWN TO ONE. Agent Pat McCabe says by the weekend Nate Jaqua will know if he has found a club in Europe. There supposedly had been interest from several clubs but apparently the choices have been boiled down to one, which McCabe would not specify.''There is no resolution yet on Nate,'' said McCabe in an e-mail. ''He has identified the club he would like to play for and we hope for an agreement in the next few days.''If nothing materializes, according to sources -- not McCabe -- Jaqua will become the property of his third MLS team in three …
