• EURO '08: Support for England's 'Sven lite'
By Paul Kennedy A match against tiny Andorra Wednesday in Euro 2008 qualifying should put an end to England's scoring drought, but a big win will hardly lessen the pressure on embattled England coach Steve McClaren. The Football Association offered its support Tuesday to McClaren, who has taken the brunt of the criticism for England's slow start in Euro '08 qualifying. ''We have been with the squad throughout the past week and it is obvious to us just how hard Steve and his coaching staff are working to get results,'' Noel White and David Richards, who head the ...
  • MLS COUNTDOWN: Columbus has nowhere to go but up

By Ridge Mahoney Will this be the final, last, drop-dead chance that Eddie Johnson gets to get back on the beam for the national team? The match is being played at Pizza Hut Park in Dallas, where he played a few productive, if unsettled, seasons before being shipped off to Kansas City. • MLS CONFIDENTIAL:Doubling Up NBDPs at RBNY?
The price of a NBDP - Non-Beckham Designated Player - could be increased by more than a factor of two, if RBNY - Red Bull New York - closes the deal on the player it is pursuing. According to a source with knowledge of the negotiations, MLS and English club Aston Villa have agreed on a transfer fee (undisclosed) for Colombian striker Juan Pablo Angel, who will join the Red Bulls if he and the club can agree on compensation. That may prove to be impossible if Red Bull is trying to get him to play ...

  • USA: Donovan eviscerates Ecuador with hat trick
By Ridge Mahoney He's asked the question a lot, especially after he shreds a defense as he did Sunday in a 3-1 thumping of Ecuador that featured the skills and speed and guile at which mere mortals can only marvel, and a killer instinct Landon Donovan sometimes lacks. ''It's not like other sports, especially basketball, where you might get the ball in a good spot 40 or 50 times a game,'' he responded last year to the hoary implication he should dominate games most, if not all, of the time. ''In hockey, you might get the puck maybe ...
