Kosovo and Gibraltar were approved as FIFA members at the organization’s congress in Mexico City, bringing its members to 211. Both will be able to compete in 2018 World Cup qualifying. Serbia opposedthe admission of Kosovo, which declared its independence from Serbia in 2008, and Spain opposed Gibraltar’s admission. Kosovo-born players include several who play internationally for other countries:Xherdan Shaqiri and Valon Behrami (Switzerland), Shefki Kuqi (Finland) and Lorik Cana (Albania).
