[PORTLAND-FLORIDA STATE] Two goals by Danielle Foxhoven gave No. 11 Portland a 2-1 win over No. 4 Florida State.
The Seminoles had taken the lead on Tiffany McCarty‘s second goal in two games, but the Pilots responded with a pair of goals by Foxhoven — the secondfrom the penalty spot seconds before the end of the first half.
This was supposed to be something of a rebuilding season for the Pilots, who was upset by Washington on penalty kicks inthe second round of the 2010 NCAA Tournament.
UP lost Canadian World Cup player Sophie Schmidt, KeelinWinters, the 2010 WCC Player of the year, and Jessica Tsao, the WCC Defensive Player of the Year. To make this worse, junior midfielder
Florida State had a 22-11 edge in shots but UP keeper Hailee DeYoungonly needed to make five saves.
“It wasn’t for a lack of effort,” said FSU coach Mark Krikorian. “I thought we put ina fine effort, but I am not sure if we were clever enough. There were times when we could have drawn up more rhythm in the play. We were taking shots from distance that had no chance ofgoing on goal. It only takes one second to score a goal. As the game went wore on, some of the players thought they had to do things individually. We certainly had enough chances toscore the [equalizer], but when you have 20 something shots and only six are on the frame, it’s not good enough. We will continue to work on that and get better.”

Florida State has a very quick team and we UP fans never relaxed until full time. It still looks like a re-building year.
