[MARYLAND-PENN STATE MEN] Taylor Kemp‘s first collegiate goal — on a full volley from 20 yards in the 88th minute –rescued No. 2 seed Maryland and gave the Terrapins a 1-0 win over No. 15 Penn State — their 15th straight win — in the third round of the NCAA Men’s Tournament.
“It’s been an ongoingjoke with Taylor all year about when he’s going to get his first goal because he gets forward so well,” Maryland coach Sasho Cirovski said. “He’s had some greatcrosses all year. He’s a threat on long-distance shots and has come close so many times. So to get the goal today, I think that is why the team erupted so much, because we have all been waiting forthat moment and we are delighted it came on this big stage.”
Maryland (19-2-1) held the nation’s top goal-scorer, Corey Hertzog, to only one shotas the Terps registered its program-record tying 15th shutout.
Next up for Maryland is another Big Ten foe on Saturday when it hosts No. 10 seed Michigan.
