South Africa’s deputy police minister Fikile Mbalula, who is overseeing crime prevention during the World Cup, had his Pretoria home burgled last weekend, losing several expensiveappliances.

Mbalula made headlines in South Africa, which has one of the world’s highest crime rates, for his tough talk on fighting criminals. Last year he urged police to take tougheraction against criminals, saying officers should “shoot the bastards.”

Mbalula was in Cape Town when the still unsolved burglary occurred.
