South Alabama stunned No. 2 Florida State, 1-0, on Monday night to hand the Seminoles their first first loss of the season.
The lone goal came midway through the first half whenDanielle Henley slipped a through ball to Charde Hannah, who beat goalkeeper Cassie Miller and tapped the ball into the goal for her second goal of the season.
Thewin snapped the Jaguars’ eight-game losing streak against the Seminoles.
“I think it’s still sinking in. What a phenomenal result,” USA coach Graham Winkworth said. “We’ve playedextremely well so far at home this season and fortune has not favored us. Tonight we defended like absolute warriors and I could not be prouder. We played against the most talented, well-coachedprogram in the country and they’re going to go on and challenge for a national championship with the coaches and players that they have.”
FSU held a 28-5 advantage in shots with 18 shotsafter halftime but could not beat USA freshman keeper Justice Stanford, who had eight stops in just her second collegiate start.
“All the credit goes to South Alabama,”said FSU head coach Mark Krikorian. “They came out with a great game plan, executed it and made us have to make decisions throughout the course of the game. Unfortunately, we made toomany bad decisions. It is a young group we have and hopefully we can learn from it and be better for the next game. We know it is a quick turnaround as we get ready to play on Thursday night againstConnecticut, who is another good team.”
Florida State is 3-1-0 with all four games played on the road. The home match against Florida was cancelled because of bad weather.
