We’ve reached the final weekend of club games in March. For players in Europe, it is crunch time in terms of promotions, relegations, championships and European competition qualifying. MLS hits Matchday 5. Players in the national team pool, regardless of league, are making their final cases to be on the World Cup team.

Here are five games to watch this weekend.

FC Cologne vs. Borussia Mochengladbach (Bundesliga 🇩🇪)
• Joe Scally, Gio Reyna, Kristoffer Lund
Saturday, March 21, 10:30 am ET 📺 ESPN+

The Bundesliga relegation race is tight with just four points separating 12th place Borussia Mönchengladbach and the relegation playoff position (currently held by St. Pauli in 16th place).

On Saturday, 14th place Cologne hosts Gladbach with a lot at stake. The winner could push toward the mid-standings while the loser faces relegation jeopardy.

Three Americans could take part in this game, all who face questions about their club and national team careers.

Joe Scally is likely to start for Borussia Mönchengladbach and a full 90 minutes from him would see him eclipse the 2,000-minute threshold for the fifth straight season with the club. That is an impressive feat for a player still only 23.

For the national team, Scally has drifted both in and out of the picture under Mauricio Pochettino, who has preferred Alex Freeman and Sergino Dest depending on availability.

But now things are different. Dest is injured and Freeman has struggled for minutes since making the move to Villarreal in January. With less than three months until the World Cup, Scally has a wide opening for the national team. It’s up to him to take advantage.

The first step is helping Borussia Mönchengladbach pull away from the relegation zone. The second step is playing well with the U.S. national team starting next week.

Then there is Gio Reyna, who is staring at yet another lost season at the club level. Moving to Borussia Mönchengladbach last summer was meant to give him a fresh start, but he has played less than 400 minutes and is yet to register a goal or an assist.

Despite this, Reyna is in a better position with the national team than with his club. Pochettino still believes in him and has given him a huge opportunity with a March callup.

Reyna might make the World Cup team, but he still needs to salvage his club career. That starts with making the most of any chance he gets with Borussia Mönchengladbach down the stretch.

Finally, there is Kristoffer Lund, who has been a regular starter for Cologne, and if he starts this game, it will be his 20th start of the season. He quickly faded from Pochettino’s plans after the Argentine coach’s first camp in charge. Even when USMNT regular left back has been injured, Pochettino has preferred working with Max Arfsten or John Tolkin

Lund is very unlikely to change Pochettino’s mind before the World Cup. But he is only 23 years old and will be in his prime next cycle, which will start in only five months with Pochettino unlikely to be the coach.

For Lund, the more pressing question is over his club career. He is only at Cologne on loan from Palermo of Serie B. Will he convince the Bundesliga to exercise its purchase option?
