“I expressed [my opinion] to Carlos Vela last year when I was in Europe, and I believe that the objective of all players in the world is to be in Europe, or at least that is the principalobjective. However, every situation has its intrinsic factors that merit a more profound analysis. I don’t know Giovani [dos Santos‘ reasons], that’s why I won’t give an opinion on it, but I doconsider that the objective of Mexican players and all youngsters that are coming through is to play in Europe and stay there for a long time.”

— Mexico national team coach JuanCarlos Osorio, the former Chicago Fire and New York Red Bulls coach, who said a player at his peak should play in Europe and not MLS, which was “for the end of a career and not for when a soccerplayer still has a lot to give.” (Excelsior in Spanish)

  1. JCO has stated the obvious. Will he be ridiculed in Mexico, like JK here? Doubtful. MLS is getting better, just stay financially sound, emphasize quality play and it will continue to earn respect. Turf and sharing with US football (Atlanta) are still mistakes.

  2. I agree with Woodie above, and the first thought that I had, is would Osorio be ridden out on a rail in Mexico just like Klinsmann has been riduculed, and will MLS Head Honchos also tell Osorio to leave MLS alone? Hey, and here’s a thought, should coaches also make Europe a goal for them to close out their coaching careers, if so then he, Osorio, should’ve made it his goal, or does he have a very deep seated anger against MLS after he got canned from Chicago?

  3. The coach before Osorio did not call up Gio for same reason. Its common sense. Gio went to Galaxy for non soccer related reasons and Vela is looking to do the same.

  4. Why get offended because coaches and players think playing in Europe is better for a players development.MLS has gotten better but it’s not there as of yet. These guys are professionals and understand how hardplayers have to work in a demanding environment to get on the field in Europe….. It’s never personal it’sbusiness.
