Bayer Leverkusen goalie Rene Adler, who appeared to have won the battle for the starting job on the German national team for the World Cup, has been ruledout of the tournament because he has to undergo surgery to repair a broken rib suffered last month.
Adler, 26, had gotten the nod ahead of Manuel Neuerof Schalke and Tim Wiese of Werder Bremen. Hannover goalie Robert Enke, another national team contender,committed suicide last fall.
