USL: Playoffs set in Championship and League One
The Tampa Bay Rowdies and New Mexico United head into the 16-team USL Championship playoffs as the conference top seeds. The Charlotte Independence, winner of its first trophy, is the top seed in the 2026 USL League One playoffs, which will begin on Friday.

USL: Rowdies go wire to wire to win Championship Players’ Shield
The Rowdies opened the 2026 season with four straight wins and never looked back. They went unbeaten in 12 games before suffering their first loss on June 13. The Tampa Bay architect is Englishman Dominic Casciato, the head coach and technical director. He undertook an offseason overhaul that has paid big dividends. The seven Rowdies who have played 2000 or more minutes are all first-year players signed from teams in the USL Championship or League One.

Soccer America’s 2026 USL Championship guide
There are just two weeks left in the 2026 USL Championship regular season, Soccer America presents a team-by-team look at the 25 teams. It is an important season for the USL, which has plans to launch USL Premier in 2028 with promotion and relegation. Teams in the USL Championship are expected to form the core of USL Premier, the new top tier. The fate of several USL Championship teams, though, is uncertain amidst stadium problems and poor support.

USL: Louisville City lifts another trophy
Louisville City became the first team to win all three USL trophies when it captured the 2026 Prinx Tires USL Cup with a 1-0 win over defending USL Cup champion Hartford Athletic before 6,179 fans at Trinity Health Stadium in Connecticut. LouCity won the USL Championship in 2017 and 2018 and the Players’ Shield in 2024 and 2025.

USL: Athletic Club Boise is moving up after one season
The USL has plans to introduce promotion and relegation in 2028. Athletic Club Boise is moving up in 2027, joining the USL Championship after one season in USL League One. AC Boise set a USL League One record with more than 6,000 season ticket sales before its first match and has sold out every home game. It will add 3,000 seats to its stadium and also start construction on a training facility.
