This past fortnight we have experienced yet again the spectacle of petulant top-flight coaches going public with unjustified criticism of referees. Last week, the eternally miserable Bayern Munich boss Thomas Tuchel described Swedish referee Glenn Nyberg as “below average” following their 2-2 Champions League quarterfinal tie at Arsenal. Nyberg had shown great sense in not awarding Bayern a penalty following a goal-kick misunderstanding between Arsenal’s goalkeeper David Raya and Brazilian defender Gabriel.
