[RUTGERS WOMEN] Rutgers won its opening game of the 2010 season with a 3-0 win over Stony Brook, but the Scarlet Knights, who moved into the Soccer AmericaWomen’s Top 25, were playing without Coach Glenn Crooks, who was serving the first game of a two-game suspension imposed by the school’s athletic department forthe 2010 season.
Crooks served the first part of the suspension in 2009, missing one game against Syracuse. He will miss Rutgers’ next game Friday against Colgate.
Associate head coach Mike O’Neill again served as acting head coach for the Scarlet Knights.
Against Stony Brook, the Scarlet Knights gotfirst-half goals off free kicks by redshirt senior Gina DeMaio and junior Julie Lancos to secure the win.
Canadian international Jonelle Filigno notched her first career goal on a strike from 23 yards out in the 55th minute.
“Gina and Julie aredeadly on set pieces,” said O’Neill. “That’s great because that is an option and something we can do. What I also liked was the third goal because it was in play and abeautiful strike by Jonelle.”
