Now that Chivas USA is officially defunct, its players will enter some kind of dispersal draft, the details of which will be available some time next week. However, during a conference call withreporters on Monday, MLS executive VP Todd Durbin said there might be some players whose “situations become so unique that we have to treat them outside the dispersalprocess.”
That would almost certainly include 21-year-old striker Erick “Cubo” Torres, Chivas USA’s top scorer this season with 15 goals. The Mexican-Americanwas actually a loanee from sister club Chivas de Guadalajara last year, although his contract included an option for the league to purchase his rights at the conclusion of the 2014 season.
According to SI.com, Torres’ transfer fee is $7.5 million — a hefty sum by MLS standards — so it’s likely that the league would front some or all of the fee to acquire the Mexicointernational. The league would then allocate Torres to either the highest bidding team or through some other kind of mechanism. Clint Dempsey’s transfer from Tottenham Hotspur to Seattlecame about in a similar manner last year.
