Carlos Cordeiro got involved with U.S. Soccer in 2007 when he was appointed to its Board of Directors after being nominated by then-federation president Sunil Gulati. Cordeiro joined the board as its first independent director following the creation of three such positions to add new leaders with skills and backgrounds beyond the scope of the board’s soccer executives. (California legislator Fabian Nunez and former U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Donna Shalala followed to complete the first trio of independent directors.)
