I grew up as a citizen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and we had a national anthem called “God Save the Queen.” From my teenage years onward, I refused to stand up whenit was played for the following two reasons — I don’t believe in God, and I don’t believe in the Queen. On the several occasions I elected not to stand up, I was neither criticized nor pilloried. Myanthem, my choice.
