The USA’s most famous soccer commentator is Argentine-American Andres Cantor, who was born in Buenos Aires in 1962 and moved to Southern California with his family in his teens. In 1987 he successfully auditioned to become a play-by-play man for the Spanish International Network, which would become Univision. Cantor’s “Gooool” call soon became well known even to English-speaking fans, who preferred Univision’s 1990 World Cup coverage because it didn’t have commercial interruptions.
