While starring in MLS, Giovanni Savarese also played for Venezuela, for which he debuted at age 17 before moving to the USA for college ball. His goals for La Vinotinto included one against an Argentina team fielding the likes of Diego Simeone, Gabriel Batistuta and Roberto Ayala in qualifying play for the 1998 World Cup.
